Trammels

Poi Tricks; Trammels

To do a trammel lets first talk about just one hand. If are spinning forwards, your arm is going to come up above your head, which will force your poi to do an anti-spin. As soon as it get to the top of its spin at the top of the extension of your arm, bring your arm straight down and this will cause the poi to extend down.

So anti-spin up for 1 beat then extend down. The other hand is doing the exact opposite in both the direction and placement of the arm.

This is a split time, opposite direction, extension vs. anti-spin, CAP.

Have fun!

Triquetras

Poi Tricks; How to spin a triquetra.

Triquetra (pronounced /traɪˈkwetra/) is a word derived from the Latin tri- (“three”) and quetrus (“cornered”). Its original meaning was simply “triangle” and it has been used to refer to various three-cornered shapes.

To spin a triquetra, start by spinning your arm in an extension and then stop your arm and go back the opposite way, this will automatically create a triquetra as you spin your arm the opposite way. This is could also be looked at as an 3 petal anti-spin flower.

Compound circles, flowers and anti-spin

Compound circles (flower patterns and fountains):

A multi-beat separation in which the poi make smaller circles within a larger circle. Poi continue to spin around the hands while arms move in extensions; smaller center of rotation (at hand) moves around a larger center of rotation (at shoulder).

Anti-spin

Poi spin in the opposite direction that the arms are spinning. Ie; the poi spin clockwise while your arm spins counter-clockwise.

Poi Flowers

This is a wonderful video by nick all about poi flowers and how to spin them.

Pendulums, 1.5’s and Flowers

A pendulum with poi is describes by only spinning 50% off the circle, primarily on the bottom or top half. Think of how a pendulum swings back and forth, the concept is the same with poi.

A 1.5 is described as as the poi spinning 1 and a half a circle. Normally the poi will spin 1 beat and then a pendulum swing for the .5. This is how a 1.5 is achieved.

Flowers are describes as putting smaller circles within 1 larger circle, like the petals on a flower.
