spiral wraps

Poi Tricks; How to do spiral wraps.

This is typically a same direction split time trick. It can be performed in many different planes, the most common would be in the wall plane in front of your body. As you wrap, remember that when you come out, the poi will be going the opposite direction they started in,

Floats

Poi Tricks; How to do a float or floater.

This is sort of a stall/isolation in the sense that the direction of the poi is stopped in its spin and then it is brought straight up, isolating on a vertical line.
Image your arm is making part of a “U” shape. This should be the path that your arm follows.

Poi box stalls

Here is a practice you can do with a same direction stall in the middle up and down. You will spin your poi in same direction split time and stall one poi up and one poi down in the middle…ore center of your body. First try doing box stalls, your poi heads meet your opposite elbows. Then try stalling so your poi heads meet in the middle, then move your poi so that you are meeting poi head to hand. Now stall a little further and meet hand to hand. Now take it even further and stall up and down , hands going past each other and poi going into an extension, straight up and down.

Cubing your poi stalls

Imagine you are standing in a cube, you are the center. You have 4 upper points and 4 lower points. Now take your poi and stall to each one of the points from every one of the points, playing with all variations. Thats stalling poi in an invisible cube.

A world of stalls

Grab your poi, stall your poi and change directions. The great thing about stalling your poi is that at its stall point, you can change into any direction, plane, spin that you choose. A stall is essentially a starting point for what ever you choose to do with your poi.

You can bring your hand over or under in an arch to stall your poi, you can stall it in a pendulum swing and you can also shoot your hand directly where the poi head just was. The last method gives a very precise, quick stall and can look very nice if done correctly.

Up Stalls and Direction Changes

Learn how to change direction from a same direction equal time up stall.

Start by spinning your poi in equal time in the wall plane in the same direction. Stall both poi up, both poi will come to a down stall, but instead of pulling them down out of the stall in the same direction they are going to be pulled out in opposite directions. Keep your poi heads together as they both come down to a downward stall. Watch the video, this will all make sense then :)

Learn to stall your poi

Learn to spin your poi both forwards and backwards and be able to transition from forward spinning to backward spinning using a pendulum stall. This is basic poi spinning material, but is invaluable in the control that it will add to your poi spinning.

Play with all the variations you can think of; both poi forward stall right, stall left, both poi backwards, stall one, stall the other. Stall both, reverse direction on only one.
Play around and see what you can learn with your poi.

How to Transition using Pendulum Stalls

One of the most important things you will ever learn in poi is how to transition from move to move, plane to plane and direction to direction. In this tutorial you will learn how to use a pendulum stall to change the direction of your spin. It is called a Pendulum stall because of the Pendulum like motion that your hand makes. It swings back and forth in the bottom half of the circle.

When spinning in same direction forwards, try letting one of your arms float behind your body and stop when it comes to a horizontal plane, then bring your arm back down to your side and continue spinning that arm BACKWARDS. When you stall you will be changing the direction of your poi, from forwards to backwards.

Once you get the motion and the idea. Try this exercise. Both hands forward equal time, stall right back, come to opposite direction spinning, left poi forward, right poi backwards. Now stall your left arm behind you and bring the left to backwards spinning. Now stall your right in front, come to forwards spin with right poi, now stall left forwards and come to both poi spinning forwards once again. Repeat until it is second nature and then do it 1000 more times.
